Wasp drinking sap

I was out today watching all the activity around my Mexican Bird Of Paradise bush. I noticed that the paper wasp kept returning to the same spot. So I began watching him. Soon I observed him chew off a very small branch. Then as I looked closer, he had chewed of several small branches. After he would chew them off, he would just hang around and wait. I then noticed him returning back to each wound on the bush lapping up the oozing sap. The honey bee's tried to take advantage of his hard work but he stood guard over his little branch attacking any honey bee coming to drink.
